Breaking News

In July 1956, model aviation pioneers Dr. Robert "Bob" Chase and Virgil Cone established a new world endurance record at Torrey Pines by flying a radio-controlled sailplane continuously for 8 hours and 34 minutes. It was the first RC soaring flight in history to exceed eight hours and remains an important milestone recognized by RC soaring enthusiasts worldwide.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this achievement, a team from TPG recreated the historic flight using a replica of the original 1956 RC sailplane made by Larry Jolly at the same site where the record was established. The event highlighted the rich aviation heritage of the world-famous Torrey Pines Gliderport, recognized by the Academy of Model Aeronautics as Model Aviation Landmark No. 1.

The launch was at 9:40am on July 1, landing at 6:15pm with portions of the flight piloted by Larry Jolly, David Hall, John McNeil, Bret Locke, Chuck Norris, and Gary Fogel. We had KUSI/FOX TV there for the takeoff and landing. You can watch their coverage on their website. Congratulations to the team!
